| Elementary Rivals, High School Teammates Once rivals on different schools’ teams, Mike and Nate have gained a valuable friendship using their competitive na tures on St. Croix Lutheran’s freshmen basketball team. Even before basketball season began, the boys clicked.
Since their schedules consist of six out of eight of the same classes, they spend practically the entire school day together. Mike claims that even though the classes can get boring at times, being with friends like Nate is something that helps keep the classes fun. Both boys say that St. Croix teachers have helped to teach them about keeping their faith as a priority, as well as putting an importance on good friendship.
Though Mike and Nate share a love for sports, they have two entirely different personalities. Talking about his first impression of Nate, Mike says, “He was a perfectionist and very serious.” About Mike, Nate comments, “I thought he was funny.” Ironically, their opposite perspectives have added to their friendship.
In basketball, Mike and Nate thrive off of each others’ strengths. The boys enjoy being on the same team together, because they can feed off of each other. Mike, being the point guard, is able to pass to Nate, who puts the ball up for a basket. Without the other’s role, it would be hard for either of them to operate.
Mike’s jocular nature comes through when he says that his life without Nate would “be without a power forward and a study buddy.” A valued friendship is something that they have gained through St. Croix and strengthened on the basketball court. Though they’re not sure what their future may hold, they can be sure that their friendship is something that will not wither any time soon.
